Early Access Update
This article looks back at a Littleroot Town development preview from September 2025.
Gamma Emerald entered Early Access on August 15, 2026, and Littleroot Town is now part of the current playable adventure. Early Access begins with the main Hoenn journey and currently continues through Mauville City.
The screenshots and video on this page have been kept because they show an important stage in Littleroot’s development before Early Access launched.

A New Look at Littleroot Town
On September 9, 2025, Gamma Emerald received a detailed development preview of one of Hoenn’s most familiar locations: Littleroot Town.
The video offered a much clearer look at how the starting town was being rebuilt for Gamma Emerald’s HD-2D presentation.
Instead of changing Littleroot beyond recognition, the preview kept the identity of the original location while giving its houses, paths, trees, lighting and surroundings much more depth.
It also showed the player moving through the town with Treecko following behind, giving an early look at another system that would later become part of the Early Access release.

Watch the original September 2025 Littleroot Town development preview below.
It captures Littleroot before the Early Access launch and makes it possible to compare the development-stage presentation with the town as it appears in the playable game today.
The video shows movement through the town, its buildings and surrounding environment, along with both daytime and nighttime views.
Littleroot in Gamma Emerald’s HD-2D Style
Littleroot is deliberately a small and quiet starting town, so its redesign depends on detail rather than scale.
The preview showed brighter vegetation, more dimensional buildings, stronger lighting and layered environmental elements while retaining a layout that still feels immediately recognizable as Littleroot.
That balance is important to Gamma Emerald’s approach to Hoenn: familiar locations remain recognizable, but they are presented through a different visual style and modern engine.
Today, Littleroot is no longer only a development showcase. It sits at the beginning of the current Early Access journey from Littleroot to Mauville.
Day and Night in Littleroot Town
One of the strongest parts of the original preview was seeing the same town under two different lighting conditions.
During the day, Littleroot appears brighter, with clear environmental colors and stronger daylight across the buildings, paths and trees.
At night, the town takes on a noticeably different atmosphere. The environment becomes darker while illuminated windows and local light sources stand out more clearly.
The feature was not limited to an experimental preview. Day and night cycles are implemented in the current Early Access build, and some Pokemon encounters can change depending on the time.
Littleroot Town During the Day
The daytime screenshots below offer a closer look at Littleroot’s houses, trees, paths and lighting.
They give a closer look at details that can move past quickly in the video, including the environment, houses, trees and general lighting.

Littleroot Town at Night
The nighttime screenshots show how much the atmosphere changes when the lighting system shifts.
Darker surroundings, illuminated buildings and more focused environmental lighting make the nighttime version feel different without changing the town itself.

Following Pokemon in the Preview
The Treecko seen following the player was another useful detail in the September 2025 footage.
Following Pokemon are now part of Early Access. Your lead or Ace Pokemon can travel with you in the overworld instead of remaining inside its Poke Ball while you explore.
Looking back at the Littleroot footage therefore shows two important Early Access systems together: the day/night cycle and following Pokemon.
From Preview to Playable Starting Town
When this footage first appeared, Littleroot was something players could only watch.
That is no longer the case.
The current Early Access release uses Littleroot as part of the main Hoenn adventure and continues through Mauville City, covering three Gyms and approximately 3–6 hours of content.
This changes how the old preview should be understood.
It is no longer a promise of what the game might eventually look like. It is a historical look at an area that has since become part of the playable release.
More Gamma Emerald Development Previews
Littleroot was shown between two other useful development previews.
The earlier Gym preview focused on Roxanne and the presentation of major battles.
The later Surfing Reveal showed how travelling across water was being developed for Gamma Emerald.
