Pokemon Gamma Emerald Early Access v1.12.1 – Download & Guide

Pokemon Gamma Emerald is now available in Early Access, bringing the main Hoenn journey to life in a new standalone experience built in Unreal Engine 5.

The current version begins in Littleroot Town and includes the journey through Mauville City, with three Gyms, approximately 3–6 hours of playable content, following Pokemon, day and night cycles, P2P trading, controller support and many familiar Pokemon systems rebuilt for Gamma Emerald.

Early Access remains in development, so the adventure currently ends after Mauville while later sections of Hoenn continue to be worked on.

What Is Pokemon Gamma Emerald?

Pokemon Gamma Emerald is a free fan-made recreation of Pokemon Emerald built as a standalone game in Unreal Engine 5.

The project follows the familiar Pokemon Emerald journey through Hoenn while rebuilding its locations, characters, events and Pokemon systems with a modern HD-2D presentation.

Gamma Emerald is not distributed as a traditional Pokemon Emerald ROM patch. The current release is a standalone Windows build.

Early Access vs the 2025 Demo

The current Early Access version is not the same release as the Gamma Emerald demo from May 2025.

The old demo featured a separate non-canon scenario involving a storm, shipwreck and mysterious island.

That demo now belongs to an earlier stage of Gamma Emerald’s development.

Early Access instead follows the main Hoenn adventure, beginning around Littleroot Town and continuing through Mauville City in the current build.

Players looking for the present version of Gamma Emerald should use the Early Access release rather than Demo v3.1.0.

What Is Included in Early Access?

The current playable journey stretches from Littleroot Town through Mauville City.

This includes the routes, towns and interiors along the completed section of the Hoenn adventure.

Three Gyms are currently available.

Playtime is approximately 3–6 hours, although the total will vary depending on exploration, team building, catching Pokemon and individual play style.

Progression beyond Mauville is not available yet because those sections remain under development.

Key Features

Hoenn Recreated for Gamma Emerald

The currently playable section of Hoenn has been rebuilt tile by tile, including its interiors.

Familiar layouts remain recognizable while lighting, environments and the overall presentation have been redesigned for Gamma Emerald’s HD-2D style.

Following Pokemon

Your lead or Ace Pokemon can travel alongside you in the overworld.

This keeps your current partner visible while exploring routes and towns instead of leaving every Pokemon inside its Poke Ball outside battle.

Day and Night System

Gamma Emerald includes a working day and night system.

Some Pokemon encounters depend on the time of day, which means returning to an area at another time can reveal different encounters.

Real-Time Berry Growing

Berry planting uses the real-world clock.

Berries currently take eight real-world hours to grow after planting.

Improved HM Interactions

HMs do not have to consume normal move slots simply to interact with obstacles in the overworld.

Once the appropriate HM functionality has been obtained, your party can automatically perform relevant actions when interacting with trees, rocks, boulders and other supported obstacles.

Hidden Items

Hidden items are placed throughout the world and reward careful exploration.

Hand-Drawn Town Map

The current build includes a custom hand-drawn town map for navigating the playable areas.

Battles and Pokemon Systems

Gamma Emerald uses its own turn-based battle implementation while retaining familiar Pokemon mechanics.

Current battle systems include:

  • Abilities
  • Held Items
  • Weather
  • Status effects
  • Physical/Special split
  • Turn-based battles
  • Familiar Pokemon damage and battle rules
  • TM move management through the Change Move interface

The current Early Access build supports single battles.

Double battles are not part of the current playable release.

Pokemon Storage and PC Access

Pokemon storage and Box management are available without requiring repeated trips to a traditional PC terminal.

This makes party and Box management easier while exploring Hoenn.

Daycare

The Daycare system is available in the current Early Access build.

Game Corner

The Game Corner is included.

Some Pokemon displayed there may currently be unavailable while Early Access development continues.

Trainer Rematches

Trainer rematches become available after earning the Stone Badge, Knuckle Badge and Dynamo Badge.

Once the current three-Gym progression has been completed, visit the second floor of a Pokemon Center to access the rematch system.

Pokemon Trading

Peer-to-peer Pokemon trading is available in the current Early Access build.

Players can trade Pokemon directly with friends and use trading to work on their collections together.

Controller and Keyboard Support

Gamma Emerald supports both keyboard and controller input.

The current controls include movement, interaction, running, menu navigation, fishing and registered actions such as the Bike.

For the complete keyboard and controller layout, visit our How to Play Pokemon Gamma Emerald Early Access on Windows guide.

Early Access Limitations

Gamma Emerald remains an unfinished Early Access game.

The current journey stops after Mauville City because the following areas of Hoenn are still under development.

Current limitations include:

  • Progression ends after Mauville City
  • Three Gyms are currently playable
  • Battles are currently single battles
  • Later Hoenn locations remain unfinished
  • Additional Pokemon and National Dex work is ongoing
  • Localization remains part of future development
  • Bugs and performance issues may still occur

There is currently no confirmed completion date for the full game.
