Early Access Update

Gamma Emerald has since entered Early Access. The current playable journey runs from Littleroot Town through Mauville City and includes three Gyms. This article is being preserved as a look back at one of the first detailed previews of the Gym system before Early Access launched.

An Early Look at Gamma Emerald’s Gym Battles
Before the Early Access build was available, one of the most interesting development previews gave us our first proper look inside a Pokemon Gamma Emerald Gym.
The spotlight was on Roxanne, the first Gym Leader from the Hoenn journey.
This preview was important because it showed more than a redesigned room. It gave an early look at how Gamma Emerald was approaching major trainer battles, character presentation, environments and the battle interface as part of its HD-2D recreation of Hoenn.
Today, with three Gyms included in Early Access, the video works particularly well as a snapshot of how those ideas were taking shape before launch.
Roxanne’s Gym Battle Preview
The development footage opens the battle against Roxanne inside a redesigned Gym arena.
Roxanne sends out Geodude, while Nosepass is also shown as part of her team during the preview.
Rather than presenting the encounter on a simple flat battle background, Gamma Emerald places the fight inside a detailed environment that visually belongs to the Gym itself.
The room uses bright lighting, layered scenery and the game’s HD-2D presentation while keeping the familiar turn-based structure of a Pokemon battle.
What the Video Showed
A few parts of the preview stood out immediately.
Roxanne received a dedicated battle entrance rather than appearing as a simple static opponent.
The Gym battle took place in a fully presented arena, with the environment remaining visible around the Pokemon.
Geodude was shown in battle, while Nosepass was revealed as another member of Roxanne’s team.
The battle interface was also clearly visible, providing one of the better early looks at how selecting moves and following a major trainer battle would work in Gamma Emerald.
The finished Early Access battle system now supports abilities, held items, weather, status effects and the Physical/Special split, although the current Early Access release is limited to single battles.
A Closer Look at Roxanne’s Gym
The screenshots below capture the Gym arena, Roxanne’s entrance and the battle interface from several angles.
Together they show the battle arena from different angles, Roxanne’s entrance and the battle interface without requiring you to pause the video every few seconds.
The screenshots are especially useful now because this article has become a record of how Gamma Emerald’s Gym presentation looked during development before the wider Early Access release.
The Gym From Outside
The development preview also included a look at the exterior of the Gym.
Instead of focusing only on the battle room, this gave a wider view of how the building fits into Gamma Emerald’s recreated Hoenn environment.
Paths, surrounding trees, building details and the layered visual style help connect the Gym to the town around it rather than making it feel like a completely separate scene.
From Development Preview to Early Access
This article was originally written when the Gym system was still being shown through development videos.
That context has changed.
Gamma Emerald Early Access now contains three playable Gyms as part of the journey from Littleroot through Mauville. The current progression also unlocks trainer rematches after the Stone, Knuckle and Dynamo Badges have been earned.
That makes this Roxanne preview more than an old teaser. It shows one of the systems that eventually became part of the playable Early Access release.
If you’re discovering Gamma Emerald for the first time, you no longer need to rely only on this preview to see the early Gym progression, you can now play that portion of Hoenn yourself.
What Else Changed Before Early Access?
The Gym preview was only one part of Gamma Emerald’s pre-release development coverage.
A later Littleroot Town preview showed the rebuilt starting town during both daytime and nighttime, including the day/night system that is now part of Early Access.
Another development video showed Surfing, giving an early look at a mechanic intended for later parts of the Hoenn journey.
